Ahmed M. Abou-Zamzam, Jr., MD, FACS

Dr. Ahmed M. Abou-Zamzam, Jr., is Professor of Surgery at Loma Linda University Health and one of the region’s leading academic vascular surgeons, recognized for his contributions to vascular education, quality improvement, and clinical research. A native of Los Angeles, California, he earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Harvard College and his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine before completing his general surgery and vascular surgery training at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon.

Since joining the faculty at Loma Linda University in 2000, Dr. Abou-Zamzam has played a central role in developing one of Southern California’s premier vascular surgery programs. He served as Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery from 2008 to 2025 and continues as Professor of Surgery, Medical Director of the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory, and Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency and Fellowship programs. Throughout his career, he has been deeply committed to surgical education and mentorship, helping train generations of vascular surgeons who now practice across the United States.
Dr. Abou-Zamzam’s academic interests span peripheral arterial disease, limb preservation, vascular trauma, outcomes research, and quality improvement. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and invited commentaries and has served in numerous editorial roles, including Editor of the Annals of Vascular Surgery and member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and World Journal of Surgery.

Nationally, Dr. Abou-Zamzam has been an active leader within the Society for Vascular Surgery, serving on its Strategic Board of Directors and chairing the Amputation Registry of the Vascular Quality Initiative. He has also contributed extensively to certification and educational initiatives as a consultant and examiner for the American Board of Surgery.

Within regional societies, Dr. Abou-Zamzam has long been a dedicated member of the Western Vascular Society and previously served as President of the Southern California Vascular Surgery Society. His election as President of the Western Vascular Society for 2024–2025 reflects his longstanding commitment to collegiality, academic excellence, and the advancement of vascular surgery throughout the western United States and beyond.

Dr. Abou-Zamzam and his wife, Dr. Sharon S. Lum, reside in Redlands, California, and are the proud parents of three adult children.
